RESUMEN La transferencia de embriones es la biotecnología más recientemente aplicada en un esfuerzo por proveer de alimentos con un al to índice de proteínas en una forma más eficiente a una poblacióncreciente y desnutrida. Cerca de 60,000 becerros resultaron de la transferencia de embriones (TE) en 1983 en América del Norte. Dicha técnica es realmente un complemento de la inseminación artificial y no un sustituto. Usada en forma atinada, puede mejorar la calidad genética del ganado en pie, vencer ciertas formas de infer tilidad, ayudar en el control de las enfermedades y proveer oportu nidades para diseñar programas especiales de reproducción. El de~ sarrollo de la tecnología de la TE ha permitido a los investigadores mejorar y controlar la calidad del embrión transferido y el -tiempo y lugar en que se puede llevar a cabo en forma eficaz. Las técnicas usadas actualmente son la bisección de los embriones y la congelación de los mismos. La determinación del sexo de los em--briones pronto será posible comercialmente. Estos avances son valiosos en la reproducción de nuevos animales y en los estudios genéticos, además de que ayudan a resolver las necesidades y deseos de los progresistas reproductores d~ ganado. Se pueden preparar por ejemplo, multipletes de un embrión masculino predeterminado en cuanto al sexo. Algunos de estos multipletes se llevan a la madurez (animales adultos) mientras que otros se conservan en nitrógeno líquido. Se recolecta el semen de los adultos y se distribuye para inseminación artificial con el fin de lograr una prueba de -progenie. Después de recolectado el semen, los otros pueden ser sacrificados. TRIGO EN SURCOS La siembra de lrigo en surcos no produce rendimientos más elevados por hectárea, pero si permite disminuir loe COSIOs de producción, ya que con este sistema los agricultores pueden reducir la cantidad de semilla 1'19 &e necesita para la siembra. Según cálculos efectuados por los agricullores entrevistados para el artículo de portada de este número, que aparece en las páginas 4 y 5, con la sfembra en surcos se puede ahorrar más de un 50 por ciento de semilla. Otros agricultores entrevistados en Sudamérica también oonfirmaron las venlajas del trigo en surcos. En una explotación triguera visitada en la Argentina se infonna que normalmente se emplean 130 kilogramos de semiUa por hectárea con la siembra al voleo. En cambio, sembrando en surcos, han conseguido reducir la semila para siembra a sólo 70 kilogramos por hectárea. De acuerdo con los p,ecios de la semilla de lrigo en la Argentina, los productores que siembran en surcos pueden conseguir un ahorro de un poco más de 10 mil dófaNIS por cada mil hectáreas sembradas de trigo. En México, los agricultores que emplean la siembra de trigo en surcos, considefan que la cosecha es més limpia y más segura. EslO es especialmente importante pare aquellos agricullores que se dedican a la produccion de semilla cerlificada. Algunos agricultores están teniendo que profundizar con más serenidad en las áreas reservadas hasta ahora al conocimiento científico y tecnol6gj_ co, para encontrar formas más, eficientes de usar el agua, de acuerdo a los últimos avances en irrigaci6n para poder distribuir un limitado y costoso abastecimiento de agua en sus hectáreas de algodón, alfalfa, granos, lechu ga, etc. 1 1 1 1 1 t 1 1 1 Nivelan primero sus terrenos a cero grados con niveladoras y equipo dirigido por rayos laser, revisan la humedad del suelo con un probador de neutrones y riegan con un sistema único que empapa las tierras rápida y fá cilmente, y sobre todo, sin desperdiciar una sola gota de agua. Sistema ntvel muerto o cero-cero Es te sis tema aparte de reducir e 1 costo de 1 agua hace que también reduzca a la mi.tad el tiempci de riego. Este sistema se lleva a efecto, nivg_ lando la tierra a cero grados; es decir sin ninguna inclinación, a nivel muerto. La mayor parte de las tierras de riego tienen inclinación; el --agua se introduce al surco desde su más alto nivel y corre al más bajo al fina l. El resultado son "colas" de agua, las cuales a menudo se pierden. En ~asiones, por el alto contenido de sal que han arrastrado en el perfil del surco, no se pueden volver a usar. Con el sistema del "cero-cero" no hay agua que corra, se obtiene me-jor penetraci.6n del agua, mayor control de la salinidad y no se tienen dei perdi ci os. - --------- �1 ' '1 ' 1 1 ' ' 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 : 1 1 : 1 1 1 1 34 Nivelar la tierra a cero grados es una tarea difícil mediante los proc~ dimientos habituales; sin embargo se convierte en fkil para los operadores utilizando maquinaria equipada con rayos laser. El uso del laser para nivelar está siendo cada vez más usual en nuestro país ya se empieza a aplicar en Sonora, Baja California y otros estados de la República. El corazón del sistema es un transmisor dando vueltas en un trípode alto colocado enmedio del terreno. Este transmisor rotativo lanza un rayo -preciso de luz que es interceptado por un receptor instalado en el equipo n.!_ velador. El receptor, a su vez controla la cuchilla automáticamente, eleván dola o bajándola, para rebajar o rellenar, conforme el equipo va avanzando a través del terreno. El sistema e·s notablemente preciso. La tolerancia de alto a bajo en un terreno de 8 hectáreas es de s61o 4 centímetros. Un buen operador de maquinaria niveladora convencional puede errar el grado deseado por más de 15 cen tímetros. 1 El costo de la nivelación por equipo laser es muy alto, pero su rapidez y precisión justifican el costo extra. ' Usando una toma de 566 litros por segundo, puede establecer un lote de 8 has., en suelos arcillosos, pero de sólo 2 has., en tierras arenosas. ' La verdadera belleza del sistema de "nivel muerto" o "cero-cero" es lo fácil y rápi.do para operar. El regador abre la toma que deja salir agua al terreno y regresa después a cerrarla. No hay tubos ni pipas que acarrear, no hay sifones que cebar y no hay problemas con las "colas". Antes utilizaban más de 12 horas para regar un terreno de 8 hectáreas. Con este sistema se toman apenas 6 horas o menos. Los técnicos de Arizona incluso han desarrollado tomas de agua automátj_ cas: un cilindro tipo pistón de aire se instala en lugar del mecanismo ma--nual para abrir las tomas. El cilindro es entonces activado por un reloj de �r , 35 tie~o que abre la corriente de agua automáticamente a la hora que se le fija y lo cierra después de determinadas horas. Otra variante es un sistema de l.Q. sa de desague a la que se adapta un cojín de aire para abrir o cerrar la to-ma. Este puede tantién automatizarse. Ventajas Existe un gran níanero de ventajas con el sistema de "nivel muerto": -Nejor penetraci6n del agua. -Nejor control de la salinidad, ya que ésta es lixiviada a una profundidad mayor que las rafees primarias de las plantas. -Menos bordes, cunetas y' zanjas para controlar la rapidez de las corrie!!_ tes de agua en aquellas tierras no niveladas a cero. --Con mayores terrenos y surcos más largos, se mejoran las labores de cul ti vo y cosecha. 1 1 i 1 .' 1 -Menor mano de obra para riegos. Un solo hombre puede atender tres to-mas o entradas de agua a la vez. --Mejoramiento de las condiciones del suelo, por la mayor uniformidad del riego, y menos c~actación. -Mejor eficienciá de agua, ya que se ahorra hasta un 20 por ciento al no haber desperdicios. -+layores utilidades. Los neutrones regresan al lugar donde salieron y son controlados entonces. El número de "clientas" en un perfodo detenninado es re lacionado a la cantidad de humedad disponible en el suelo.
