Sorne of the blame fer this undoubtedly lies at . the door of cheap imports. Only recently Dutch middles could be purchased fer 1Op per lb less than the British product. lt is not surprising, therefore, that their share of the market has grown at an alarming rate. There's nothing like a keen price to give a product a competitive edgel The problem, one processor tells us, is one of relativa pricing. The Outch and Danes have had expanding industries resulting in low pig prices, whereas our prices have been too high and processors have suffered as a result. But our market can no longer be viewed in isolation. lt is influenced to an increasing extent by what. happens to our Continental competitors. Our processors can't pay more for their pi~ and remain competitive, they point out. They have to get their returns from the same mMket. What' s needed is a pricing policy that helps both producer and processor, enabling each to prosper in the long term. Against this background it is highl1/ appropriate that the NFU should publish the first of their commodity reviews New directions for pigs policy. following on from the Union's umbrella document The Way Forward. The Union concludes that it is neither necessary nor desirable to change fundamentally the system of market management for pigmea! in the Community. But it does concede that econom!c conditions in the rest of the EEC have been more stable than m the U K. For this r68son "sorne attempt must be made to adopt the marketing practicas observed on the Continent". The document, which is realistic and workmanlike, suggests that political action alone is unlikely to be sufficient to ensure greater stability and concludes that "improvements should continue to be pursued on the marketing front". But just how this should be done it doesn't say. Riding the switch-back of the pig cycle is clearly good for neither produce, nor processor. Greater stability can only come from a system which gives a fair return to both. Finding such a system is something which still seems to elude ali our industry' s experts. Marketing Now pork is bootiful Market monitor F there's anything the Danish and Dutch pig industries lack, it's certainly not confidence. Danish slaughterhouses are to spend a massive C169 million to improve technology and increase capacity. Of this about C11 O million will go towards modernisation of abattoirs and boning plants. A new grading system is to be introduced to measure meat-to-fat ratio and muscle thickness more accurately. Dutch pig numbers now stand at a record leve!. December 1984 showed a seven per cent increase comparad with a year earlier and the April census is expected to show further gains. Total breeding sows stand at over 1.3 million and in-pig gilts, at 186,000, are 11.4 per cent up. By any standards the pig industries of these two countries are among the most successful in Europe. The Danes, for instance, have increased the number of pigs slaughtered annually from nine million In 1974 to 14 million in 1984. Why is this? lt is significant, we believe, that both countries have built up successful export trades. And in neither case is it restricted solely to lheir European neighbours. lf EEC partners provide the 'bread and butter' of this trade, then the lucrative markets in the United States and Japan are the 'jam·. Yet here in Britain, after Jusi a short spell of profitability we are already talking down the market. At the National Pig Awards, NFU presiden! Sir Richard Butler admitted that he had not had to take so much interest in the plg industry ovar the past year because it had been in a better state, But with pig prices up and cereal prices down, he hoped it would not lead to over-production. He suggested that poHtics and marketing will determine the future of the pig induslry and that changes must be made to the EEC's pigmeat regime to benefit the UK. "lmprovements must be made in making av~lable support measures, such as prívate storage aids, according to difficultles in individual member states rather then waiting for the whole EEC market to deteriorate before action is taken." Few would argue with this. But it is also true that the Danes and the Dutch have managed to thrive and prosper within the EEC framework by building up massive overseas markets. As the wares at this year's National Pig Fair will show, for sheer technical efficiency at próducing plgs we are second to none. Our European partners are happy to make use of our stock, equipment, feed, management know-how and research findings. Their deal with tt-e Ministry provad to be v~ry expensive indeed. lnstead of the C6 million they were led to believe would cover the scheme the cost to producers has ~ow r san to nearly (23 million (f 15 million overdraft + f.7 f1 million already paid out in levies). · Se, ·, farmers generally, and liveatock keepera in particular, don·t want the ill-fated Aujeszky's scbeme to establish a preccdent, they should pay heed to the recommendations contained in the Third Report from the House of Commons Select Committee. This document looks at the organisation and financing of the scheme and is the nearest we are likely to get to the independeni enquiry called for by Pig Farming last January. · lt accepts that the whole history of the scheme II lo,ig, involved, complicated, muddled and fraught with misunderstandin¡ls. Despite this it suggests that there is a "departure flOm common justice when a department eotirely escapes the conaequences of what, at the very least is lack of clarity in communications; and at the most might amount to maladministratlon". In fact. the M inistry must bear aome of the responsibility for the financia! over-shooting. The Committee therefore recommends that the Minlstry and producers get together to devise a formula whereby the extra costs could be shared. lt further suggests what Pig Farming has said for a long time, that the whole farming industry should recognise one of its sectors is in serious difficulties as a result of a type of scheme that could be introduced in other areas. The Minister wa~ prepared to offer good money to help dahy farmers when quotas were introduced, probably because of their political power. Now the NFU, the NPBA. and other agricultural organisations should take this opportunity to press Michael Jopling as hard as possible to make amends for the financia! mauling pig producers have suffered through thls scheme. In this very issue (page 24) we report on .a producer who is unhappy about the way he has been treated under thls scheme. Yet he has already paid (4500 In levies. En realidad lo es. Pero conviene seguir un camino cauteloso y de sentido común cuando se aplica comercialmente. Primeramente, debe considerarse que la ingeniería genética en et ganado es una ciencia joven -y u1llizarse sólo como suplemento de los métodos ya comprobados para mejorar los ha10s.
