(CONTINUA) Para demostrar verdad tan conocida me basta decir á vd ., que después que los españoles, valiéndose de los medios más reprobados, consiguieron despojará los que de inmemorial tiempo poseían el natural dominio de este vasto continente, sacrificaron á sus magistrados y sujetaron á sus habitantes á la más dura servidumbre. Después que fijaron su dominio, continuaron con la política más rastrera sofocando la naturaleza, y lo que más horroriza, privando á sus mismos hijos de la ilustración, cultivo de las artes, y de todo aquello que el derecho natural permite, sin que para lo justo y honesto nos fuese �BOLETÍN DE LA BIBLIOTEC.~ NACIONAL DE MÉXICO. concedido hacer representaciones legales, so pena de perder la vida; siendo por otra parte intolerables las exacciones y ningunos los arbitrios para adquirir. En tales circunstancias, con la voluntad presunta y aun expresa de todos. los pueblos, e! Excmo. Sr. D. Miguel Hidalgo, de inmortal memoria, se valió del último recurso entre los extremos viciados que es el de la guerra. De esta sencilla y verídica narración se infiere naturalmente que al partido que vd. llama de la rebelión sobreabunda la justicia, sin que para ofuscarla pueda servir la objeción que vd. hace, sacada de la uniformidad y concierto con que todos los lugares de la Nueva España vitoreaban á Fernando VII, porque el populacho, siempre rudo y bárbaro, obra por una especie de movimiento maquinal que puede imprimirle cualesquiera que tenga interés en ello, como entonces lo ejecutaron los españoles. Además de que si vd. puede usar de tal argumento para probar el señorío de Fernando VII sobre las Américas, ¿por qué no nos ha de valer para justificar los procedimientos del Sr. Hidalgo, que con mayor generalidad fueron aplaudidos no solamente del bajo pueblo, sino de muchas corporaciones y hombres ilustrados de casi todas las provincias? Esto así fué , y por más que se diga, el partido de la libertad es j nstísimo. Bien puede Fernando VII tener un corazón bondadoso; pero lo que hemos palpado es: que durante su reinado todo ha sido horror y sangre derramada por Calleja , Cruz, Negrete y todos los comandantes, que lejos de ser castigados ó siquiera reconvenidos por un rey bueno y amante de sus vasallos, han sido premiados con proporción á sus excesos. El sistema de los españoles para perpetuar su dominación en las Américas, impide oír las quejas de los agraviados, por lo que ni el rey ni los representantes de la soberanía podrán hacer otra cosa, para llevarlo adelante, que desentenaerse de las quejas de los americanos ecomo ha sucedido con las que con justificación elevó á Calleja el Dr. D. Antonio Lavarrieta del coronel Iturbi; de) haciéndoles grandes promesas cou el ánimo de no cumplirlas. Semejante conducta, á más de que justifica, persuade la necesidad en que el Sr. Hidalgo se bailó para dar la voz de independencia, autorizándolo suficientemente el atentado del 16 de Septiembre de 1808 cometido contra la persona del Excmo. Sr. D. José de Iturrigaray, sin haber otra causa que haber querido este jefe, con arreglo á las leyes, con consentimiento de todas las corporaciones y á nombre del rey, establecer una Junta que gobernase durante su cauti verio. Estas son pruebas de hechos tan notorias, que :;e puede asegurar no hay quien las ignore en todo México .•Si atendemos al derecho ~011 que los reyes se hacen señores de sus vasallos, me debe vd. concede¡ que el rey es un depositario de la soberanía que reside en un pueblo; que Juego que aquel degenera en tirano, deja de ser r'ey, quedando sus vasallos soberanos de sí mismos, en virtud de Jo que pueden elegir la forma de gobierno que mejor les convenga según las circunstancias. .T oda novación en la forma de gobierno prepara funestas consecuencias, y ya hemos palpado lo que nos ha costado la presente novedad; pero la consecuencia legítima no es la que vd. deduce; sino que faltando á los españoles la justicia en el orden moral y cristiano, ellos serán los injustos, y los que habrán de responder á Dios y á los hombres de las innumerables víctimas, y ellos también serán tratrados de inhumanos é impolíticos. El Sr. Hidalgo era sabio de primer orden, y no podrían ocultársele ni los elementos militares, ni los grandes recursos del gobierno que quería echar por tierra; pero sabía muy bien que en circunstancias más tristes nuestros vecinos de los Estados Unidos, habían llevado adelante sus miras de independencia hasta conseguirla; además de que este argumento es tan general, que nada puede concluir, pues probaría que jamás podría nación alguna conseguir sn libertad. Las batallas de Aculco, Guanajuato y Calderón, comparadas con las jornadas de Piñones, Zitácuaro, San Agustín del Palmar, Cuautla, Tonalán y otras, prueban hasta la evidencia que la naturaleza no obra por saltos, sino ~adualmente, y que debemos decir de nuestras desgracias, lo que Pedro el Grande dijo de sus derrotas: que á fuerza de ser vencidos aprenderían á vencer. Esta refleja me hace concebir fundadas esperanzas, de que los defectos que vd. nota en los partidarios de la independencia, se habrán de corregir; pues si extendemos la vista á las revoluciones de todos los tiempos y últimamente á la de Francia, podemos asegurar que los excesos nuestros, son ningu.1os comparados con aquellos, y que pasada la borr&sca se hace lugar á la serenidad .
